The Queensland Fire have surged to a timely bonus-point victory over Western Australia today at Allan Border Field to get their Women's National Cricket League campaign into gear.
Qld Fire Bolt To Bonus Point Win
After losing their opening two games last week against NSW, Queensland had counted on bouncing back against WA this week in their two-game series at Allan Border Field.
They did so in emphatic fashion, romping to an eight-wicket win that netted them a bonus point. Dimissing WA for 81 from 26.4 overs, Queensland cruised to the total in just 15.2 overs courtesy of an unbeaten half century from player of the match Georgia Voll.
Winning the toss and bowling first proved just the ticket for captain Jess Jonassen and the home side, snapping up three wickets in the Power Play thanks to quicks Nic Hancock and Lucy Hamilton.
Western Suburbs allrounder Lilly Bassingthwaighte made her Queensland debut, with the 17-year-old Australian Under-19 representative showing some pleasing touches in her three over spell that netted 0-11 and almost snared her a wicket but for a bobbled catch.
Bassingthwaighte got her start after leg-spinner Grace Parsons was ruled out with back soreness before the game.
Voll got the ball rolling with three fours in the second over of the run chase
Although the Fire lost Georgia Redmayne and Charli Knott cheaply, Voll was humming at the other and found the boundary 12 times in her unbeaten 61 which came off just 42 balls.
She was supportably beautifully by Jonassen (19no), as the pair saw the total reached after only 15.2 overs.
Voll, who spent much of her winter recovering from a serious hamstring injury sustained during a UK playing stint, made a playing return last month during the KFC T20 Max competition and then for Australia 'A' in the four-day game against India 'A'.
