University of Queensland opener Angus Lovell is set to make his Queensland Bulls debut at the Gabba this weekend after being chosen for the Marsh Sheffield Shield match against competition front-runners Tasmania.
Bulls Call On Lovell
Lovell, 24, comes into the Bulls line-up off the back of solid form for Queensland in the Toyota 2nd XI competition and for the Blues in the KFC Queensland Premier Cricket competition.
The tall right-hander scored 84 and 21 against Tasmania at St Lucia and 137 and 18 against WA in Perth recently and is the third leading runs-scorer in KFC Queensland Premier Cricket behind Preston White (Toombul) and Scott Palombo (Norths).
Lovell (pictured in action for the Queensland U-19 team) currently has 770 runs at 42.78 in all formats for University of Queensland this season.
Born on the Isle of Wight in the UK, he lived briefly in New Zealand before his family settled on the Sunshine Coast where he became the youngest player to make his first grade debut for the Sunshine Coast Scorchers, as a 16-year-old.
He captained Queensland at Under-17 level where he broke a 35-year-old record at the 2016-17 national titles, named player of the tournament for his return of 489 runs. He also represented Queensland at Under-19 level where his teammates included BBL championship Heat players Nathan McSweeney, Max Bryant and Xavier Bartlett.
After joining UQ, Lovell enjoyed a break-out season last year where he and fellow Bulls opener Bryce Street broke a Premier Grade record, as the duo scored double centuries in a first wicket stand of 0-423.
He has also played Second XI cricket in the UK for Middlesex and Surrey in 2022 where he scored a century.
Lovell is one of two changes from the previous Bulls team that drew against WA at the Gabba last month prior to the BBL competition window.
He and Ben McDermott come into the line-up in place of Australian players Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne. Wicket-keeper Jimmy Peirson will captain the team.
The match will be streamed live on cricket.com.au and available through Kayo. Admission is free, with public entry via Gate 5 on Vulture Street.
Queensland and Tasmania will also clash in a day/night Marsh One Day Cup game at the Gabba on Thursday from 1pm Qld time. Admission is free, with public entry via Gate 5 on Vulture Street.
