Wet weather and then bad light have combined for a disappointing start to the Queensland Bulls season with a no result in their One Day Cup clash against Tasmania today.
Weather Halts Bulls
The match at Junction Oval in Melbourne was unable to be started until mid afternoon with regular showers keeping the covers on, and the players off, the field.
When the game got underway, it was reduced to 20 overs a side, with Tasmania winning the toss and sending Queensland in. Another shower intervened, with the Bulls 1-4, and the game was further shortened to 16 overs a side.
A determined half century from Matt Renshaw (51 from 36 balls) and a composed 35 from 28 balls from Lachlan Hearne gave the Bulls a decent shot at a competitive score. Boundaries at key intervals from Jack Wildermuth, Jack Clayton and Hugo Burdon steered Queensland to 5-128.
The fading light seemed set to provide a tricky chase, but the rapid onset of darker conditions saw the umpries and new Bulls captain Mitch Swepson and Tasmania's Jordan Silk come together before the scheduled start of the Tigers innings with the match then abandoned.
Hearne and young pace bowler Tom Straker were presented with their Queensland caps on making their debuts prior to play by their Premier club and now Queensland teammates Matt Renshaw and Mark Steketee.
