Brisbane to host Blind & Low Vision Junior Program

Queensland Cricket’s commitment to inclusivity has taken another significant step forward as the Queensland Blind Cricket Association (QBCA) launches its inaugural Woolworths Cricket Blast program this season. Set to take place in Brisbane, the program is designed to introduce young vision-impaired participants to the game of cricket, aligning with Cricket Australia’s national entry-level initiative.

While QBCA has previously run junior programs, this new chapter is made possible through additional funding from the Woolworths Cricket Fund. The funding will allow the association to expand its reach and offer a structured pathway for young players to experience the game in a supportive and accessible environment.

The 7-week Woolworths Cricket Blast program kicks off on Saturday, 19th October 2024, at Yeronga Memorial Park, offering participants a chance to hone their skills while enjoying the fun, inclusive nature of cricket. For just $25 per person, attendees will receive a Cricket Blast Pack, ensuring everyone feels part of the cricket family. The sessions will run from 10am to 12pm every Saturday, making it the perfect weekend activity for aspiring cricketers.

Regional Outreach Gaining Momentum

Queensland Cricket’s dedication to growing Blind cricket isn’t limited to the metro area. Just this weekend, members of Queensland’s Blind cricket team, including current Australian captains Matthew McCarthy and Julie Neumann, travelled to Townsville for a “Have a Go” community day, aimed at introducing the sport to regional participants. Seven enthusiastic individuals joined the event, with some showing promising potential to represent Queensland in the future.

Local Queensland Cricket staff member Antony Stewart played a crucial role in the day’s success, working alongside Vision Australia to ensure the event was accessible and enjoyable for all.

“The response was fantastic. We’re always looking for ways to bring cricket to new communities, and it was rewarding to see so much enthusiasm from participants in Townsville,” said Stewart.

A Big Week for Diversity and Inclusion

Queensland Cricket’s diversity and inclusion programs were in full swing last week, with a series of events showcasing the organisation’s dedication to providing opportunities for all. The action-packed schedule began with the grand final of the Multination Challenger’s Trophy on Saturday, followed by the launch of the Queensland Intellectual Disability (ID) and Deaf & hard of hearing representative programs on Sunday. The week then began with the Eddie Gilbert First Nations Gala Day, hosted in collaboration with Deadly Choices at Allan Border Field.

Get Involved with Blind Cricket Blast

The Metro Blind Cricket Blast program is shaping up to be an exciting opportunity for vision-impaired participants to get involved in cricket, meet new friends, and develop their skills. With the support of the Woolworths Cricket Fund and Cricket Australia, the program aims to foster a love for the game among young players and build the foundation for future Queensland representatives.
