Raymont Shield Heats Up

The Katherine Raymont Shield blazed back into action last weekend as the spate of bad weather finally moved on to enable a full round of women's first grade games in the KFC Queensland Premier Cricket competition. LAURA SCHEIWE reports on all the results,

Valley put an early poor run of form well and truly behiond them with their second win for the season against University of Queensland.

Some handy inclusions in Queensland Fire players Jess Jonassen, Sianna Ginger, Lucy Bourke, and Kira Holmes helped the side to a total of 6-292. Ginger led the show with a quickfire 97* off just 69 deliveries, including 9 boundaries. Also in the runs column, Jonnasen (67) and Bourke (60) after the Queensland Fire have has a break between WNCL fixtures. Wickets were hard to come by and each came at a price as both Claire Molloy and Tara Wheeler took 2.

As this chase was always going to be difficult, the Students weren’t quite up to the challenge being bowled out for 166. Tara Wheeler got a solid start of 30 (61) but was unable to go on. Laura Harris didn’t stray away from her natural game as the batter creamed 37 off 12 at a strike rate of 308. Opening bowler for Valleys, Billie Ryan was helpful with the ball taking 3/40 off 7 supported by Ginger’s 2/28.

With some changes in their batting line-up, Gold Coast were able to put on their biggest score of the season against a full-strength Sunshine Coast. After winning the toss and electing to bat first, the Dolphins opening batter Lauren Patterson (45 off 86) got her team of to a strong start. The middle overs were held together by Scheiwe (58 off 87) before a quickfire 27 for Olivia Winter at the backend of the innings. Fiery bowling from both opening quicks, Bonnie Berry (2/48) and Catherine White (1/31) were hard to score off as the Gold Coast made it to 8/233.

Sunshine Coast made light work of such a large total as Rachel Priest scored a timely century. The wicketkeeper-batsman scored through all parts of the ground including some big blows over cover. Finishing on 117* off 132 deliveries, Priest certainly held the innings together for the Scorchers. Mikayla Wrigley also contributed with 56 off 84 deliveries as a few chances were missed for the Dolphins. The Sunshine Coast were able to chase 233 in the 48th over with 7 wickets remaining.

Sandgate-Redcliffe elected to bat first at Jack McLaughlin Oval as the lowest total for the weekend was scored, 182. Caitlin Mair got the Gators into a grove early with her 59 (81). Some contributions in the middle order with Mia Croucamp’s 23 and Darcey Johnson’s 19 was an achievement in itself with fine bowling from Caitlin Lutvey (4/37) and Lilli Hamilton (2/22). Fresh off a Queensland Fire debut, Hamilton has continued to be tight in both line and length going at an economy of only 2.20.

Western Suburbs made this chase look easy as their star-studded line up did not falter. With the return of Georgia Redmayne smashing 51 and Coutrney Sippel following with 64*, going wicketless was never an option for Sandgate. New English import, Cordelia Griffiths also contributed with 50* off 44 deliveries. The Middlesex and Manchester Originals player has continued her form from the English summer. Only losing 1 wicket, Western Suburbs chased the total with 19.1 overs to spare.

University of Queensland are still holding onto first position with 32 points followed by Sandgate (28) and Sunshine Coast (26).
