Bulls Roar At Gabba

The Queensland Bulls have jumped into third spot on the Sheffield Shield ladder after defeating NSW in the last 30 minutes of their match at the Gabba yesterday.

Set 418 for an unlikely win, NSW resumed at 1-11 at the start of the final day.

Rising star Sam Konstas fell to his former Australian Under-19 teammate Tom Straker, who had earlier removed night-watchman Ross Pawson.

Mark Steketee chimed in with the key wickets of the in-form Kurtis Patterson and dangerous hitter Ollie Davies before Bulls captain Mitch Swepson trapped first innings half century-maker Matt Gilkes.

The Blues found themselves five wickets down for the second time in the match for less than 100 runs, before their first innings hero, captain Jack Edwards, set about saving the game.

He and wicketkeeper Josh Philippe (80) kept alive hopes of a draw as they held out against the old ball.

But as Queensland had hoped, the second new ball effort from Michael Neser and Xavier Bartlett proved decisive in securing maximum points.

Bartlett had Phillipe LBW and then Neser nabbed Edwards in the slips as the Bulls zeroed in on the remaining wickets as the shadows lengthened.

Bartlett (2-39) and Neser (3-72) would not be denied though, the pair mopping up the tail as stumps loomed.

It was Queensland's second win a row and will give them heart for the remainder of the season with three games left, including another Gabba clash next week against Western Australia.

Queensland's win was set up by a commanding batting effort by player of the match Jack Clayton and Matthew Renshaw, with each hitting match-defining centuries.

Renshaw's 125no was his second first class ton this season.
