Premier Women All Fired Up

As the Katherine Raymont Shield draws to a close, the two remaining rounds have never been more important. LAURA SCHEIWE delivers the latest update

A very tight top 5 means nearly every team is still in finals contention.

University of Queensland still claim top spot on 39 points as Sandgate-Redcliffe are nipping at their heals on 38 points.

The much anticipated fixture between Sandgate-Redcliffe and third placed Sunshine Coast, turned out to be suprisingly one sided.

The Scorchers looked good early electing to bowl and snagging key wickets.

With the competitions two leading runscorers, Tess Cooper and Caity Mair out in the first 9 overs, Sunshine Coast were in a strong position to take the game away.

Coming in at number 5, Meagan Dixon played a superb innings of 64 off 76 deliveries including 5 boundaries. This was closely supported by Mia Croucamp's 40 off 53 balls.

Not a week goes by Tarah Staines is not in the wickets column as she spun a web for her 3/37 (10). Shari Anderson's medium pace also picked up three wickets as Sandgate were bowled out for 204 in the 44th over.

With only 3 runs coming from the first 5 overs of the Sunshine Coast innings, the Scorchers never got going. A string of single digits in the runs tally as only one batter made past 8 runs.

The entire Sandgate bowling line up contributed with a wicket as the Sunshine Coast were bowled out for just 67.

In some tough batting conditions at Katherine Raymont Oval, Gold Coast toughed out their 50 overs against Western Suburbs.

A much anticipated return from injury for Ruby Strange (pictured above in the Spring T20 Challenge) saw the Queensland Fire athlete take a wicket on the first ball of the match.

Getting through the worst of the conditions, Felicity Koch played a solid innings of 20 (59) with middle order batter Lara Shannon (29 off 64).

Spin once again played an important role as Ash Sims, Trinity Doyle and Ayaka Stafford led Western Suburbs. A superb backend knock from Olivia Winter was a highlight as the Toowoomba product struck 51* off 73 to guide Gold Coast to 6-156.

There was no match between the sides as Ruby Strange walked onto the field in the second innings.

Playing a back foot cover drive for 6 on just the second ball of the innings, Strange did not slow down as the all-rounder struck 61 (54).

Emma Taylor was certainly the pick of the bowlers for the Dolphins taking 2/22 off 8 including 36 dot balls.

Some measured batting for overseas athlete Cordelia Grriffiths (27*) and Trinity Doyle (39) saw Wests chase the total in the 30th over with 7 wickets remaining.

Currently in 5th position, Wynnum-Manly are doing their best to secure a top 3 finals position with a victory against Valleys DCC.

Winning the toss and electing to bat first, a new look Valleys side scraped to a total of 10-108. A solid effort from Grace Abdy (23 off 59) and Jessica Crightton (21 off 78) was not enough against a strong Wynnum outfit.

Star legspinner, Amreen Kahlon took a well earned 5 wicket haul. Kahlon is leading statistically in the one day competition with 17 wickets at an average of just 9.

Wynnum captain Clodagh Ryall guided her team home with a long 54* off 104 deliveries including 5 boundaries.

Opening bowler Ophelia Donohue was consistent taking 2/21 off 9 overs. Eve Mollee contributed as well with 21* off 76 to chase the total down in the 38th over.

Second Grade also had some exciting moments with two maiden centuries for Sophie Whittaker (Wests) and Matisse Easton (Sandgate).
