Bulls Tackle WA At Gabba

The Queensland Bulls will host Western Australia at the Gabba from tomorrow as they seek to continue their Sheffield Shield resurgence.

Queensland jumped to third spot on a congested Shield ladder last week when they defeated NSW outright at the Gabba.

It will be the Bulls last home Shield game of the summer, with their remaining regular season first class matches against Tasmania in Hobart and current leaders South Australia in Adelaide.

Queensland has named paceman Tom Whitney (pictured) and Gold Coast batter Hugo Burdon for tomorrow’s clash, with 19-year-old quick Tom Straker missing the game as part of his bowling management plan.

Burdon comes into the squad for the injured Jack Clayton (hamstring), who is targeting his return for the remaining two matches next month.

If selected in the starting side, the 23-year-old Burdon would make his first class and Sheffield Debuts for Queensland.

Head of Elite Cricket Joe Dawes said Burdon had earned his call-up in the wake of strong performances in the Toyota 2nd XI competition and for the Gold Coast in the KFC Queensland Premier Cricket competition.

“With Usman Khawaja having some well-earned downtime following the Sri Lankan tour and Jack Clayton recovering from injury, we’re excited for Hugo to earn the opportunity for a possible debut,’’ he said.

Burdon, who played for the CA XI against the touring English Lions last month, captained the Queensland 2nd XI to a win earlier this month over NSW, scoring 100 and 53 in the match.

Whitney returns to the line-up for his third Shield match this summer after making his mark earlier in the season when he claimed the third-best match bowling figures of all time for Queensland.

It will be his first Shield game at the Gabba.

Admission is free for the match, with the action livestreamed through cricket.com.au

Queensland and WA will also meet in a One Day Cup match on Sunday at the Gabba, with the Bulls coming off a strong win over NSW last week at Allan Border Field.
