Maroons Stand Out

The Queensland Metro team made the final against NSW Metro, but were unable to repeat their victory from last season, falling to the Blues in the decider.

Queensland Country, in their second season as a stand-alone team at National Youth level, won three matches to easily exceed their solitary win last season and clearly demonstrate the value of providing additional representative opportunities for more regional players.

Gold Coast wicket-keeper Lachy Aitken, who scored a team high 157 on the way to being Metro’s leading runs-scorer with 353 runs at 70.6, was named in the Team of the Championships as well as the Australian U-19 squad that will take on England in January in Brisbane.

Valley paceman Callum Vidler was also named in the Team of the Championships and is a stand-by player for the series against England Under-19 alongside fellow paceman Cody Reynolds (Gold Coast).

As well as Aitken, Queensland captain Huigh Weibgen (Valley) and Toombul paceman Tom Balkin were named in the Australian squad.

Cairns batsman Matthew Wilkiins (Qld Country) hit his team's highest score in the tournament with 103, while Toowoomba's Rex Tooley was his team's highest score with 203 runs at 40.

Wilkins, the Country captain, produced his century in their last game against Northern Territory while Jackson Evetts claimed 5-46 against the ACT. Spinner Cody Saddler took nine wickets to be the team's leading wicket-taker.

Wynnum-Manly opener and wicket-keeper Reuben Burger hit 286 runs at 47.5 for the Metro team.

The Youth Selection Panel has selected a 15-player squad following the conclusion of the 2022-23 Under 19 Male National Championships in Adelaide.

The squad features six players from the title-winning New South Wales Metro team, while Queensland Metro and Western Australia each have three representatives.

NSW Metro defeated Queensland Metro by six-wickets to claim the Under 19 Male National Championships title in the Final at Karen Rolton Oval on Thursday.

The Under 19 Male series against England begins on January 29 with a four-day match at Allan Border Field in Brisbane.
