International Matches Confirmed

The Gabba will host a summer holiday Test for the second season in succession as India return to the scene of their most important victory in Australia.

The International fixtures released today by Cricket Australia feature India taking on Australia in the Third NRMA Test at the Gabba from 14-18 December.

For the first time since 1991-92, the Border-Gavaskar Trophy Series between India and Australia will be over five Tests.

The opening day of the Gabba Test will coincide with the first day of the 2024 Christmas school holidays.

The last time the two teams met at the venue in the 2020-21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy series featured one of the all-time great Tests, with India breaking Australia’s stranglehold on Test matches at the Gabba.

Their thrilling last day victory in the Fourth and final Test of the series competed a 2-1 series win for India in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

It was Australia's first loss at the Gabba in 29 matches, and 32 years, with the host nation not losing between 1989 and 2020 to traditionally start the summer’s Test battles on a high note.

India’s exuberant celebrations in breaching the Gabba fortress were replicated earlier this year, when the West Indies stormed home to win their day/night Test at the venue to level the Frank Worrell Trophy series in their two-Test contest.

It was the first time Australia had lost a day/night Test on 11 occasions, with those pink ball Test matches staged in either Adelaide or Brisbane.

The West Indies Test attracted an excellent crowd of 67,164 for the four days.

Queensland Cricket CEO Terry Svenson said fans would no doubt anticipate another bumper Test at the Gabba.

“The past three Gabba Tests against India, South Africa and the West Indies have delivered action and drama like few others,’’ he said.

“Naturally we’re disappointed that Cricket Australia hasn’t allocated the first Test to Brisbane, with the venue possessing an enviable record of 27 wins and four draws for Australia in the opening Test of a series,’’ he said.

“However, having Australia take on India in what will again be a crucial Test in the series will be another memorable encounter.

“The Third Test will start the school holidays on a high for many fans as we lead into the summer break, and it will be the centrepiece of an exciting period of Gabba matches.

“The championship winning Brisbane Heat will also play their matches at the Gabba after the Test and will be out to continue their outstanding home ground form for their fans, including the many families who make the BBL an integral part of their summer entertainment plans,’’ he said.

Svenson said the recent commitment from the State Government to upgrade the Gabba as part of the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic preparations would be of increasing importance for the future of cricket at the venue.

“A key factor going forward will be ensuring continued investment in the venue to maintain the Gabba’s competitiveness against other stadiums as future events are scheduled,” he said.

Svenson welcomed the spread of international matches that would be played throughout the summer in Queensland.

“Queensland will again host a strong array of women’s international fixtures, and we look forward to the Australian Women’s team showcasing their skills and passion in Mackay at Great Barrier Reef Arena and at Allan Border Field in Brisbane,” he said.

Australia will take on New Zealand in T20 Internationals in September, with two matches in Mackay and one in Brisbane.

Allan Border Field will also host two women’s One Day Internationals against India in December, including a day/nighter.

Svenson also highlighted the return of men’s T20 International cricket to Brisbane, with the Gabba hosting Australia against Pakistan in November.

Last time the Gabba hosted an Australian T20 International was during the 2022 ICC T20 World Cup when the home side defeated Ireland in October, 2022.
