A brace of strong wins over the ACT Meteors has the Queensland Fire primed to surge into the second half of the Women's National Cricket League.
Fire Soaring In WNCL
The wins in Canberra over the weekend lifted Queensland into second spot, with ladder leaders South Australia just three poiints ahead.
The Fire had several stand-out performers from the two games.
A strong bowling performance in the first match saw the home side bowled out for 152, with allrounder Sianna Ginger (2-17 from 8 overs) backed by Charli Knott (2-20), captain Jess Jonassen (2-26) and Lucy Hamilton (2-25).
The Fire lost seven wickets in the chase as they actively chased a bonus point, reaching the target after 20.4 overs with English international Lauren Winfield-Hill top scoring with 43 from 29 balls and Laura Harris hitting 26 from 12 balls to clinch the win.
The second match featured super efforts from Jonassen, who took 4-31 from10 overs, and Knott who celebrated her selection in the Governor-General's XI to face England next month with a sterling knock to guide the Fire to a comfortable six-wicket win.
Set 169 for victory after ACT Meteors opted to bat first at EPC Solar Park in Canberra, Knott's fine 79 not out from 72 balls helped Queensland reach their target with more than 21 overs remaining.
The 22-year-old allrounder struck 12 boundaries and had ample support from opener Lauren Winfield-Hill who was dropped at midwicket in the first over on four before going on to make 45 from 51 balls.
It was Knott's career-best WNCL score and comes after she hit her maiden century in the 50-over format while playing for Southern Vipers in the English domestic competition earlier this year.
